YouTube TV Will Bundle WBD’s Max with NFL Sunday Ticket
July 28, 2023
YouTube TV is bundling Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max with its own NFL Sunday Ticket out-of-market football package. YouTube parent Google entered into an exclusive, seven-year deal to offer the NFL Sunday Ticket package through YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels, beginning with the 2023 season. Max has become a Sunday Ticket partner as part of a broader deal with WBD that includes getting Google TV behind WBD’s relaunch of HBO as Max. Philipp Schindler, chief business officer for Alphabet and Google, shared news of the promos with analysts during his company’s Q2 earnings call.
YouTube is currently offering the NFL Sunday Ticket in various configurations. Through September 19, subscribers to YouTube TV (at $72.99 per month) can purchase a 2023 season’s pass to the Sunday Ticket for $299 instead of the regular $349 price. YouTube is also making the Sunday Ticket available as a one-off for $339 (compared to $389).
“The deal with Warner Bros. Discovery shows that YouTube is looking for new ways to merchandise and market Sunday Ticket,” writes Variety, explaining that Google will pay the NFL “between $2 billion and $2.5 billion per year for Sunday Ticket, up from the estimated $1.5 billion that DirecTV had been shelling out.”
The Sunday Ticket includes all of the NFL’s out-of-market Sunday regular-season games broadcast on FOX and CBS. “That means that if you subscribe to YouTube TV and Sunday Ticket, you’ll be able to watch and/or record every single NFL game during the 2023 season,” Variety observes.
DirecTV, having after three decades apparently gotten priced out of the NFL Sunday Ticket has entered into a deal with NFL’s EverPass Media to make the Sunday games available to commercial customers including restaurants, casinos, bars and hotel lounges.
YouTube’s NFL promotions also include a deal with Verizon, which is providing the Sunday Ticket as a value-added perk to “eligible new and upgrading wireless and home Internet customers,” Variety reports. Terms of the agreement between Verizon and YouTube have not been disclosed.
Verizon previously entered into a deal with the NFL to be the exclusive wireless games carrier. “The telco says the complimentary football games package carries a $449 value,” per Variety.
Verizon says it’s offering the Sunday Ticket as part of its myPlan, which has been making available bundles featuring Apple One and Disney’s Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu.
