CES: Alienware Intros Updated Laptops, Curved 4K Monitors
January 11, 2024
Dell’s Alienware has redesigned its gaming laptops with the debut of the m16 R2. It is also coming to market with Pro Line peripherals and two new QD-OLED curved gaming monitors, being showcased this week at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The new m16 R2 laptop has a slimmed down look, with a reduced heat shelf and Stealth Mode that turns off the glitzy lighting and boisterous sound for gamers who want their portable hardware to perform double duty as a productivity device. The company also unveiled its first competitive gaming peripherals, the Alienware Pro wireless mouse and keyboard.
“The redesigned m16 R2 is built to be the brand’s take on an all-purpose notebook,” writes VentureBeat, citing a 15 percent smaller footprint, achieved by redesigning the Cryo-tech cooling technology to eliminate the need for a thermal shelf. “Now, the m16 R2 fits into a small backpack and gives players even more desk space for peripherals,” VentureBeat reports.
The m16 R2 has a dedicated hotkey that activates Stealth Mode, substituting white keyboard backlighting for arcade colors and reducing fan noise, accommodating buyers that want an revved-up game machine that can also be put to general use without distractions or unwanted public attention.
For those focused on mobile game performance, Alienware has supercharged its gaming notebooks with three new models: the x16 R2, ultra-premium x16 R2, and “performance juggernaut” m18 R2, this last for players seeking to replace desktops. The portable but powerful machine “boasts the highest storage capacity (up to 10TB) of any Alienware laptop and cooling upgrades to boost performance,” VentureBeat says.
A host of upgrades (including Nvidia DLSS 3.5 AI upscaling) are coming to Alienware’s entire line of portables, the company explains in a news announcement.
Alienware also unveiled what it says in a press release is the world’s first 360Hz QD-OLED display and teased a 32-inch 4K QD-OLED curved gaming monitor.
The $1,200 4K panel is “crafted to help reduce reflection and also to capture expanded peripheral vision with infinite contrasts, true blacks and peak luminance up to 1,000 nits for a more comfortable viewing experience,” Engadget reports, noting “Alienware promises blacks that are 10 times darker than a standard picture. It also claims you’ll have access to colors never seen before on a screen,” thanks to Dolby Vision HDR and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400.
Of the $900 27-inch model, Engadget calls its 360Hz native refresh rate “astounding” and says it’s “built for competitors,” while Alienware says it’s also for “streamers looking for the best in QD-OLED technology.”
Lastly, Alienware’s new Pro Line peripherals are “built to satisfy eSports players at the highest level,” according to VentureBeat, writing that “eSports organization Team Liquid played a key role in developing Alienware’s brand new competition-ready wireless keyboard and mouse,” (details of which are available in the company’s laptop news release).
