CES: Sennheiser Touts Its New Wireless Momentum Earbuds
January 24, 2024
Sennheiser has updated its flagship Momentum True Wireless earbuds, adding support for Qualcomm’s aptX audio tech. The company also debuted a Momentum Sport edition that tracks heart rate and body temperature. The Momentum True Wireless 4 promises “unparalleled sound,” combining Sennheiser’s audio expertise with Qualcomm’s S5 Sound Gen 2 platform and Snapdragon Sound Technology with aptX for lossless sound and ultra-low latency. Boasting 7.5 hours of continuous listening, the new buds come in black copper, metallic silver, and graphite for $300. The more rugged Momentum Sport with biometric features lists for $330.
The Verge points out that heart rate-sensing earbuds, while nothing new, are “still far from commonplace” and the technology wasn’t included in Sennheiser’s earlier Sport True Wireless.
“The Momentum Sport earbuds can track your heart rate using a built-in photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor and sync with sport devices and apps from Apple, Garmin, Strava, Peloton, and Polar,” The Verge writes.
“For the first time ever in a non-Polar product, users will be able to enjoy full access to Polar’s elite biosensing capabilities and data analytics — including Body Temperature — offering real-time insights during training and deeper offline analysis via the Polar Flow app ecosystem,” according to Sennheiser’s press release.
The Momentum True Wireless 4 focuses more on pure acoustics. Qualcomm’s aptX tech “delivers lossless CD-quality audio when paired with a compatible device,” according to The Verge, which cites support for power-efficient Bluetooth LE Audio as well as Auracast, “which allows one-to-many broadcasting” while on the go. A Qi quick-charging case for USB-C is part of the package, available February 15.
“The new flagship buds also have six internal microphones to improve Adaptive ANC” and noise cancellation, writes ZDNet. Adaptive ANC optimizes the sound target “to constantly adjust to changes in the ambient noise environment, reducing distractions so subtle details in the content shine through,” Sennheiser explains.
For times when wireless listening is not permitted, such as airplanes, “an audio cable is included to tap into in-flight entertainment systems or other headphone outputs.”
TechRadar calls the Momentum 4 Sennheiser’s “best earbuds yet” while lamenting “the lack of spatial audio tech (present in many big earbuds competitors).” The outlet calls the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless headphones over-ear equivalent best in class for premium headphones.
