Microsoft Unveils 3 New Xbox Consoles for Holiday Shoppers

Microsoft has three new Xbox consoles slated for the holiday shopping season, including an all-digital Xbox Series X model in Robot White. This $450 discless iteration has up to 4K resolution, 1TB of SDDS storage and the same performance as the Carbon Black Series X introduced last year. A white Xbox Series S with disc drive is also coming, for $350, “for players who wanted more storage without the full power of Series X.” For power users, a 2TB Galaxy Black Xbox Series X Special Edition that offers “the same speed, performance and features of Xbox Series X” is priced at $600.

The “unique design” of the Special Edition, which has a disc drive, features “a silver, grey, and green celestial effect representing thousands of games and millions of gamers playing on Xbox,” Microsoft revealed in a press release issued from the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, which indicates preorders for these new models will be opening soon.

Tom’s Guide reports the “all-digital Xbox Series X has been rumored for a while,” explaining the new model “removes the 4K Blu-ray disc drive and comes in a Robot White color scheme that stands out without being overbearing, otherwise, it’s the same console we’ve been enjoying for the best part of four years.”

Tom’s notes the Special Edition has “double the storage of the base console” with a “nifty design” with gray and green highlights. It comes with a controller that sports the same look and also has “a unique D-pad and velocity green back casing.” This particular controller will only be offered as part of the Special Edition bundle “available in limited quantities in select markets.”

Game Rant points out that the Xbox Series X and Series S were originally launched for holiday 2020 but that current models “offer a considerable jump in power over their predecessor, the Xbox One.”

The Verge notes that “the existence of a white Xbox Series X appears to confirm that Microsoft has canceled or pushed back the refreshed version of the Xbox Series X console that appeared in FTC v. Microsoft documents last year.”

That version, codenamed Brooklin, “featured a more cylindrical design than the existing console, and it also would have had no disc drive” and “was supposed to ship with a new controller and Xbox Wireless 2 connection,” tentatively set for a November release for $500.
