Gemini Powering Google Vids Multimedia Presentation Builder

Google has launched the beta version of its Gemini-powered Google Vids productivity app, which lets users create work-related video presentations that embed documents, slides, audio recordings and even additional videos into a timeline. Incorporated into Workspace Labs, Google’s AI preview space, Google says invited participants can use Vids to “build a narrative with high quality templates” or “get to a first draft faster.” Access to Google’s royalty-free stock content library and Vids recording studio means a project can be completed “without ever leaving Workspace,” according to the company.

“While you can generate video in Vids, it’s not to be confused with AI tools like OpenAI’s Sora, which can create lifelike footage from a prompt,” reports The Verge. “Vids is about generating a presentation by describing what you want Gemini to create and then letting you alter the video afterward.”

Google’s announcement functions as a quick-start guide, with links to instructions (including for Workspace Labs), a get-started page, a teaser video and a demo uploaded to YouTube from April’s Google Cloud Next, when Google Vids was originally unveiled.

As indicated by the Cloud Next video demonstration, “the key feature is using Gemini to automatically insert stock footage for you, generate your script, and even give it an AI voiceover for your next presentation without you saying a word,” summarizes The Verge.

“Google Vids will also let you turn your presentation slides into a video and edit the text or music for each section if you want,” Notebookcheck adds, lamenting the limited availability while pointing out that “it’s important to remember that Vids is still in its early stages, and this release allows Google to iron out any kinks before a wider rollout.”

In addition to Gemini, Google Vids leverages Google’s Vertex AI, Decrypt explains. “In a bid to broaden the appeal of its audio features, Google Vids also lets users choose from a variety of voices, from energetic, friendly, and calm, in different dialects, including American, British, and Australian English.”

Decrypt notes that Canva is also using generative AI to help enterprise and businesses “create eye-popping visuals,” citing the company’s Magic Studio, released in October 2023.

Google released its Gemini 1.5 Pro model to developers in June, simultaneously introducing Gemma 2, an open-source LLM, that is designed to be quicker and more flexible.
