August 22, 2024
Sony Electronics is releasing two new 4K handheld camcorders. The NXCAM HXR-NX800 is aimed at consumer workflows, while the XDCAM PXW-Z200 is built for professional applications. Both models utilize artificial intelligence recognition capabilities, high-precision autofocus, 20x optical zoom, a variable neutral-density filter and assignable lens ring. The camcorders also feature Sony’s newest BIONZ XR image processors. “The cameras are suited to individuals and small teams” in the informational broadcast and educational fields, with a market debut planned for September. The HXR-NX800 will retail for $3,300 and the PXW-Z200 for $4,000.
The new models “promise some of the professional-grade Alpha camera technology found in cameras like the FX30, FX3, FX6, and FX9 in an all-in-one camcorder,” PetaPixel writes, noting that the Z200 (below) has SDI and timecode and, through a firmware update, will as of June 2025 have MXF wrapper support, encoding in the efficient audio/video file packaging format popular in professional broadcast settings.
“We’re pleased to combine some of our most sought-after and beneficial features into a handheld form factor to accommodate professionals at all levels with the options and capabilities to make their work more impactful, visually appealing, and efficient,” Sony Electronics VP of Imaging Solutions Yang Cheng said in an announcement.
The AI recognition, autofocus and 4K 60p/120p recording all “facilitate high-quality capture with less manual input,” reports Sports Video Group News, lauding the pair’s “highly accurate, real-time recognition, tracking, and framing of subjects.” Additionally, the 1.0-inch Exmor RS CMOS stacked sensor “provides high-sensitivity and low-noise capability” in both models.
An electronic variable ND filter lets users toggle between 1/4 to 1/128 density. “Users also have the option to enable auto-ND … especially useful when moving quickly between indoor and outdoor environments,” according to Sony.
Rings for focus and zoom and two dials for IRIS/ND variable “are located side-by-side, for effortlessly adjusting exposure along with focus and zoom” and the panel includes 12 assignable buttons for customization.
Built for portability and network connectivity, the HXR-NX800 (above) and PXW-Z200 have an “active mode” that “combines electronic correction with optical image stabilization” for “smoother imagery on the go,” TV Technology explains.
