Samsung Electronics, which teased a glasses-free 3D gaming monitor at CES in January, officially announced the scheduled release of two versions at Gamescom last week. Both sizes employ light field display (LFD) technology to create what Samsung calls “lifelike 3D images” from 2D content by using a lenticular lens on the front panel. “Combined with Eye Tracking and View Mapping technology, Odyssey 3D ensures an optimized 3D experience without the need for separate 3D glasses,” according to Samsung. A built-in stereo camera monitors the movement of both eyes while proprietary View Mapping continuously adjusts the image to fuel depth perception.

The Odyssey 3D will come in 27- and 37-inch versions that will begin shipping globally before the end of the year. The 4K QLED panel has a high 165Hz refresh rate along with a 1-millisecond response time. It comes with AMD FreeSync Premium for reduced latency and improved visuals, according to the Samsung announcement.

“The company remains mum on the total cost and that’s likely because it’ll be extremely expensive,” writes Engadget, explaining that “historically, Samsung Odyssey gaming monitors are pricey, and that’s without glasses-free 3D.”

Tom’s Hardware points out that “while the Odyssey 3D is marketed toward gamers, its price and limited gaming applications mean that it would most likely be used by professionals instead.”

The Odyssey 3D “will allow users to ‘seamlessly switch between 2D and 3D modes’ based on preference — which may tempt folks who are curious about 3D gaming, but apprehensive to commit,” suggests The Verge.

As for the 3D tech, The Verge reports that “Acer uses a similar system in its own SpatialLabs laptops and monitors,” noting that “the resulting Stereoscopic 3D can only be viewed by one person at a time, but that’s hardly an issue for gamers.”

Other high-end Samsung gaming monitors poised for release this year include the Odyssey OLED G8, which Tom’s describes as “an ultra-wide 21:9 display boasting a 3,440 x 1,440 pixels resolution.”

Then there’s the Odyssey Neo G9 and Odyssey OLED G9, which Tom’s says “offer an even more immersive view with their 32:9 ultra-wide ratio” and dual QHD resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels. All have an 1800R curve radius.
