New TikTok Live Subscriptions Help More Creators Monetize

TikTok is updating its Live subscription offering, renaming the monetization offering simply “Subscription,” opening it up to eligible non-Live creators in regions including the U.S., Japan, Brazil, France, the UK and Germany. Like the third-party subscription platform Patreon, TikTok’s Subscription allows fans to pay creators for exclusive content and other perks. In participating regions, creators can offer fans monthly subscriptions at three price tiers, each with its own parameters and perks. TikTok launched Live subscriptions in 2022 and announced in March that it would be revamping the feature to allow more users to monetize.

TikTok Subscription “competes with Instagram Subscriptions and YouTube’s channel memberships, both of which allow creators to grow their earnings by giving users access to additional content and perks,” TechCrunch reports.

Content that subscribers can access includes “exclusive videos, Lives, and notes that are only visible to paying users,” as well as “additional communication channels, such as Sub Space, which is an exclusive space for creators to interact with their subscribers.”

Subscribers can distinguish themselves with special badges to accompany profiles and unique stickers for Live events.

Other perks available to creators customizing their subscription tiers are shout-outs, performance requests, behind-the-scenes peeks, Discord participation, the ability to game together, and even some “custom perks designed by the creator,” TikTok explains in a newsroom post.

“To access Subscription, creators must be 18 years or older, have an account in good standing with at least 10K followers and 100K video views in the past calendar month, or meet specific Live eligibility requirements,” according to TikTok.

Social Media Today calls that “a pretty big presence in the app” for the privilege of accessing Subscriptions, but lauds the platform for not only offering additional elements, but “guiding creators on what, specifically, they can offer, in order to ensure that the subscription packages are viable and valuable.”

TikTok directs creators interested in the platform’s varied monetization avenues to the monetization module in TikTok Studio “for an overview of all offerings, personalized recommendations, and detailed revenue analysis to identify new and relevant growth opportunities.”
