Samsung’s New Galaxy Z Fold Releasing Only in South Korea

Samsung is releasing a Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition that will initially debut in South Korea on October 25 at a price of roughly $2,000. This thinner, lighter new Z Fold sports larger displays and a superior 200MP camera system, an AI-friendly 16GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, though by the time it debuts in the U.S. it may have the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite, which Qualcomm says will start showing up in products by the end of this year. Samsung is positioning the exclusive limited run as “a thank-you” to local customers. There are rumors of a possible China release forthcoming.

TechRadar reports that among the upgrades to the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition are a 6.5-inch outer display and nearly 8-inch inner display that is Samsung’s largest ever. The Galaxy Z Fold6, released globally in August, has a 6.3-inch outer and 7.6-inch inner display.

The inner screen boasts pixel resolution of 2184 x 1968 (QXGA+), “2,600 nits of peak brightness, and 120 Hz dynamic refresh rate,” per PhoneArena. The cover display, on the other hand, is 6.5-inches with 2520 x 1080 (FHD+) pixels resolution but Samsung doesn’t specify the refresh rate.

The expansive screens put the Z Fold back in competition with rivals like the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and OnePlus Open, and its 21:9 aspect ratio makes the Special Edition “proportionally wider than the skinny 22:9 cover screen of the Z Fold6,” TechRadar says, noting that the inner display has the same nearly square 20:18 aspect ratio as the Z Fold6.

AT 200MP, the camera is equivalent to that on the flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra, a major upgrade from the Fold6’s 50MP. It’s thin, too, at 10.6mm, a 1.5mm difference from the Z Fold6. It’s only 4.9mm when unfolded. The thinness seems to have come at the cost of S Pen support, the absence of which Tom’s Guide and others lament.

The new model is also 3g lighter than the Fold6, weighing 236g. That makes Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition “both thinner and lighter than most other flagship folding phones, slimmer than both the OnePlus Open or Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold but still beaten by the Honor Magic V3,” TechRadar points out.

PhoneArena notes that Samsung has equipped its new foldable with a tougher exterior thanks to “Armor Aluminum frame, water-resistance, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 all around.”
