Xperi Plans Launch of TiVo OS Smart TVs by End of This Year

TiVo owner Xperi is gearing up for the launch of TiVo OS-powered smart TVs in the U.S., with production beginning as soon as this month. The company revealed that a U.S. manufacturing partner will enter production sometime in November, with another partner expected to do the same shortly after. Xperi expects to achieve its target goal of at least two million TiVo OS smart TVs on shelves by year’s end, which is about double what is currently available. However, the company addressed shipment delays that could push monetization expectations to 2025. Xperi is projecting seven million TiVo OS smart TVs will enter the global market by the end of next year.

“With accelerating partner activity we believe we remain on-track toward our year-end target of two million active connected devices,” Xperi CEO Jon Kirchner said in a Q3 earnings release documenting a $16.8 million loss on $132.9 million in revenue.

“The company bills TiVo OS as a smart TV operating system designed to help users find content across their streaming apps, allowing users to create universal watchlists and get personalized recommendations based on their unique taste profile,” CEPro writes.

Earlier this year, TiVo revealed it has signed seven manufacturers, including a recently announced unnamed company. “This new unknown TV manufacturer is a ‘top five supplier’ of smart TVs in the U.S. and plans to launch TVs powered by TiVo in the U.S. next spring … Kirchner said,” according to CEPro.

Kirchner has also announced that Sony will use TiVo’s search and discovery tech into their lineup of sets powered by Google TV.

The smart TV OS sector is extremely competitive right now, with newcomer Xumo from Comcast and Charter Communications “hot off a new retail deal with Target,” Light Reading reports. It joins a field that in addition to Google TV includes Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Roku, Samsung Tizen and LG Electronics’ webOS.

Though Xperi didn’t disclose the company that is expected to have sets in U.S. stores for the holiday season, it could be Sharp, which Xperi in mid-2023 announced as a North American partner. Sharp is also a manufacturing partner in Europe, where TiVo OS TVs began shipping earlier this year in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Turkey.

Panasonic, Argos and Vestel are also bringing TiVo-powered sets to market overseas.

Xperi ended Q3 “with 2.4 million households using TiVo platforms, and now has a dozen pay-TV operators signed up for TiVo Broadband, a relatively new low-cost content option for the company’s operator partners,” Light Reading explains.
