Google Offers Spotify Extension for Gemini Mobile Ecosystem
December 2, 2024
Google has added a Gemini extension that lets users link their Spotify accounts and leverage the AI for music search and discovery. Currently only for Android in English, the app accepts spoken and text prompts to select music by song, album, artist or playlist using “Play & Search.” Only Spotify Premium subscribers will be able to request and play specific tunes on demand. And while users will be able to use Gemini to activate existing playlists or pipe music themed to an activity or mood (like workouts or romantic meals), it cannot create a Spotify playlist or radio.
To connect to Spotify using Gemini, “your Spotify account must be linked to your Google Account,” Google explains on a support page. If Spotify isn’t already linked through another Google service, you can connect the music app to Google’s AI using Gemini Apps.
“The feature echoes what Google rolled out for Gemini users earlier this year for YouTube Music,” reports Android Central.
“Since Google made Gemini the new and official replacement for Assistant, it has seen a constant addition of new capabilities,” observes Android Police, noting that in addition to extensions and “the usual conversational utility the AI excels at, we’ve recently seen plans to rearrange the menu items in Gemini as well.”
The Verge points out that “Spotify is the second non-Google app to gain Gemini abilities following the rollout of WhatsApp support that started in October.”
“As always, users have control over the Spotify extension, meaning they can disable it (within the settings) or unlink their account,” Android Central writes, adding that Google has “a few advisories, such as Gemini’s Spotify extension not working with the AI’s web app, Messages, or Gemini on iPhone.” When using Android mobile, “users can even voice their commands to Gemini by starting with ‘Hey Google’.”
Users should be aware that “if you’ve already linked another music service like YouTube Music, you’ll need to verbally say (or type in) which service you want Gemini to use as part of your initial request, and from there, it will default to whatever was used last,” per The Verge.
Earlier this month, Google added Gemini as a standalone app on the iPhone following integration with Google (Search) in February, notes 9to5Google.
