CES: Lenovo Reveals Third-Party SteamOS Gaming Handheld
January 15, 2025
Lenovo announced the Legion Go S, the first device outside of Valve’s own hardware to officially ship with SteamOS. Launching in May 2025, the $499 handheld gaming PC joins Valve’s Steam Deck in the lower-price segment of the PC handheld market. The device features an 8-inch display with 120Hz variable refresh rate and runs on a Lenovo-exclusive AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip. Lenovo plans to release both SteamOS and Windows versions, with the Windows variant arriving first. The device introduces several technical improvements over its predecessor, replacing detachable controllers with an integrated grip design.
The Legion Go S features a 1920×1200 resolution display, configurable RGB lighting around the joysticks, adjustable trigger mechanisms, and dual USB 4 ports.
The Ryzen Z2 Go chip operates at higher power levels than the Steam Deck, which maxes out at a 15 Watt TDP (the Lenovo Go S should comfortably achieve at least a 30 Watt TDP), targeting around two hours of battery life during demanding gameplay.
Valve co-designers Lawrence Yang and Pierre-Loup Griffais confirm that the Legion Go S will integrate with the Steam ecosystem, receiving the same SteamOS updates as the Steam Deck.
The integration process, and the reason for the SteamOS version’s slight delay relative to the Windows release, includes implementing support for the device’s touchpad, gyroscope, RGB lighting, and TDP configuration options. Valve indicates that Lenovo is currently its only partner for a SteamOS device, though we expect that to change.
Alex Zhu, Legion Go product manager, cites SteamOS’s out-of-box experience as a key factor in the partnership while emphasizing the value of Windows for gaming and productivity.
The SteamOS version will launch at $499.99 with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, while the Windows variants will start at $599.99 with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, extending to $729.99 for the 32GB RAM model.
