Anthropic Introduces a New Claude Hybrid Reasoning Model

Anthropic has released a new frontier model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, described as the industry’s first “hybrid AI reasoning model.” The new Claude is different in that it can both respond to questions in real time or, alternatively, “think” about a problem for a prolonged period of time — basically as long as a user would like. Users can choose between “near-instant responses or extended, step-by-step thinking that is made visible to the user” by selecting the appropriate “reasoning” capability for Claude, Anthropic says. Along with the new model, Anthropic is also debuting a command line tool for agentic coding, Claude Code.

Claude Code is available in “limited research preview,” enabling developers to hand-off to Claude “substantial engineering tasks directly from their terminal.” Coding and front-end web development are key areas of improvement for 3.7 Sonnet, so the tools complement each other, Anthropic explains in a news post.

VentureBeat calls the debut of Claude 3.7 Sonnet “a warning shot at OpenAI, DeepSeek and the entire AI industry” as the company moves aggressively into the enterprise AI space with “a model that gives users unprecedented control over how much time an AI spends ‘thinking’ before generating a response.”

Coupled with the command line prompt, 3.7 Sonnet “could reshape how businesses build software and automate work,” VentureBeat reports.

Claude 3.7 Sonnet “represents Anthropic’s broader effort to simplify the user experience around its AI products,” TechCrunch writes, echoing a sentiment expressed by OpenAI in moving to streamline its product line.

“Most AI chatbots today have a daunting model picker that forces users to choose from several different options that vary in cost and capability,” TechCrunch explains, noting that “labs like Anthropic would rather you not have to think about it — ideally, one model does all the work.”

Anthropic says its latest model was developed with a different approach than that of other reasoning models on the market. “Just as humans use a single brain for both quick responses and deep reflection, we believe reasoning should be an integrated capability of frontier models rather than a separate model entirely.”

The new 3.7 Sonnet “is both an ordinary LLM and a reasoning model,” according to Anthropic, which asserts the unified approach offers a more seamless experience for users.

Claude 3.7 Sonnet is available on all Claude plans — including Free, Pro, Team, and Enterprise — as well as the Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, and token pricing hasn’t changed from that used with previous models. However, the new extended thinking mode is not available on the free tier.
