CES 2013: Illumiroom Set To Light Up Your Viewing Experience
January 16, 2013
Microsoft demonstrated a research project called Illumiroom at the Samsung CES keynote event. Illumiroom is a display technology that fills the room with images and lights beyond the traditional limitations of a television screen. For example, the technology was used to present a video of an individual playing Xbox games while providing the appearance that it was snowing in the room.
“It’s actually a Microsoft Research project that uses a Kinect for a Windows camera combined with a projector,” reports Engadget. Kinect captures the geometry of the room and adapts the projected visuals in real-time.
“Our system can change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences,” explains the Microsoft Research site.
The group says it will have more information and a paper explaining the proof-of-concept project for ACM CHI 2013 in April. The Engadget post includes Microsoft’s 1-minute video demo.
