Facebook Graph Search to Open New Doors for Media Companies

As we reported earlier this week, Facebook’s new Graph Search allows users to find answers to questions by searching their own connections and personal network instead of going the route of a traditional open Web search a la Google. According to Variety, the new search tool has the potential to “give media companies more firepower to leverage the social network for content discovery.”

“The function has the potential to be an asset for biz marketers in driving promotion and word-of-mouth on movies, TV shows and other entertainment content,” writes Variety.

While announcing the product earlier this week, the company showed off its potential for use as recommendation tool for entertainment. For example, at the press conference, typing “movie my friends like” resulted in a variety of movies that were liked across the span of a user’s friend base.

Beyond that, marketers will likely be able to use the Graph Search for its purposes, as it “will certainly incorporate sponsorships at some point, which will allow entertainment marketers to tie text requests to like-minded content,” suggests the article. “Unspecified at the press conference but still likely to come would be linking search results for entertainment to transactional opportunities.”

The onset of Graph Search will certainly bolster companies’ presence on Facebook, if they aren’t yet present on it. “If there’s still any movies or TV network in 2013 that don’t have their own Facebook page, now might be a good time for their owners to remedy that,” concludes the article.
