March 18, 2013
Samsung unveiled the new fourth generation flagship Galaxy S 4 at its Unpacked event in New York last week. Features of the new Android 4.2.2 phone include a screen that can be used when wearing gloves, improved camera capabilities with autofocus and no shutter lag, larger screen size, improved battery life and a slimmer yet stronger form factor. The Galaxy S 4 also touts smart features based on eye-tracking technology.
“The GS 4 features a 5-inch 1080p (1,920 x 1,080) Super AMOLED panel which offers a pixel density of 441 ppi and the ability to use your gloves at the same time,” reports Engadget. “It’s also a powerful beast: it packs 2GB RAM and will come with either a 1.6GHz Exynos Octa-core chip or a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm, depending on your region.”
“Dimension-wise, the GS 4 is 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm (5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 inch) and weighs 130g (4.59 ounces). The chassis itself is actually 0.8mm skinnier, 0.7mm thinner and 3g lighter than its predecessor, which is impressive given its larger screen size and 2,600mAh battery.”
With “Smart Pause,” videos will stop playing if the users’ eyes drift away from the screen. “Smart Scroll” allows the screen to move up and down when the phone is tilted and eyes are on the screen. The new phone can also preview emails, calendars, and images by simply hovering a finger over it instead of actually physically touching the screen. The new Samsung Translate app handles both text-to-speech and speech-to-text translations in a variety of languages.
The camera has some major improvements. With a new “dual-video” feature, users can capture video with the back and front-facing camera simultaneously. The feature has also been incorporated with the “Dual Video and Call mode”, which gives the option of letting you show the caller your current point of view during video chats. There is also “Drama Shot” where users can make animated GIFs and “Shot & Sound” where a picture can be sent with up to nine seconds of audio.
Samsung is currently only selling the device in black or white, but plans to include more colors soon. There is currently no set price as the phone ‘s international release is expected at the end of April through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and Cricket along with global mobile operators Deutsche Telecom, EE, and Vodafone.
