JVC first revealed a prototype of its 8K Super Hi-Vision projector at CEATEC in 2008. After five years of development, the company is reportedly ready to ship a product version later this month. The DLA-VS4800, which uses JVC’s e-Shift pixel technology, is expected to initially be made available in Japan for about 25 million yen, or $261,000 U.S. (without the four available lenses).

According to Engadget, JVC has found a way to implement the technology without altering the number of pixels.

“Basically the D-ILA display panel inside the device is half the resolution (in this one, 4,096 x 2,400) but projects two images alternated at 120Hz, one shifted slightly diagonally,” notes the post. “This creates the impression of a higher res display, without actually upping the pixel count.”

JVC first showed its e-Shift technology in 4K projectors in 2011, which it updated for last year’s models. While the company plans to launch in Japan this month, content remains a question.

“The other issue is that you’ll still need some content to view, and with the roadmap currently putting test broadcasts in 2016, leaving this one to the museums and planetariums it’s intended for may be the best course of action.” Engadget notes.

Sharp is also working on an 8K Super Hi-Vision LCD, which is still in prototype phase.
