Vdio Comes Out of Beta: Offers Movies and TV Episodes

Video discovery and viewing service Vdio, which was created by Skype co-founder Janus Friis, officially came out of its limited beta this week, making it available for anyone interested in renting or purchasing movies and TV shows in the U.S. and U.K. Vdio is available online and as an iPad app. According to the Rdio Blog, “starting today, you don’t have to be an Rdio listener to buy, rent and share your favorite movies and shows with friends.”

Vdio launched its beta test in April, with access offered only to Rdio music subscribers. While that requirement has been lifted, “there are signs that Vdio and Rdio may be even more closely connected in the future,” reports GigaOM. “Rdio’s outgoing CEO Drew Larner recently told Bloomberg that he is helping the company look for a new chief executive to ‘expand efforts to sell combined music and video subscriptions.'”

Vdio was originally developed with plans to launch as a subscription service that would compete with Netflix. When those plans were eventually scrapped, Vdio was aligned with Rdio.

However, the idea may not be dead. Malthe Sigurdsson, Rdio’s VP of Product, said a subscription component “is something we would love to do.”

“We gave Rdio Unlimited subscribers an early screening of Vdio, our online television and movie service, but starting today, you don’t have to be an Rdio listener to buy, rent, and share your favorite movies and shows with friends,” explains the Radio Blog. “Grab some popcorn and scroll through our Spotlight or some Sets to discover something new to watch now.”
