YouTube Available for Roku 3, Additional Model Support Soon

One criticism of Roku’s popular line of streaming media devices has been a lack of support for YouTube, now one of the most essential sources of video and music on the Internet. YouTube announced this week that Roku 3 users will finally have access to YouTube content on their TVs. Users can also pair their mobile devices to YouTube on the Roku with the “Send to TV” feature, which lets you send videos by simply connecting a tablet or smartphone to the same Wi-Fi as your Roku player.

“The YouTube channel rounds out our industry-leading selection of streaming entertainment just in time for the holidays,” notes the Roku Blog. “Whether it’s finding a helpful tutorial, listening to the latest music, or watching your favorite videos for hours on end, YouTube has something for everyone and today we couldn’t be more pleased to announce the launch of this much-anticipated channel on our platform.”

“This fixes a glaring hole in the Roku 3’s feature set — despite the fact that competitors like the Apple TV and pretty much every game console on the market have long had access to YouTube, it has been sadly lacking on the Roku until now,” reports The Verge. “Unfortunately, only customers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Ireland will be able to get YouTube on the Roku 3, and there’s no word on when it might expand to other countries.”

The new app availability for Roku 3 does not apply to earlier players, but Roku suggests that additional models will gain access sometime in 2014.

According to the YouTube Blog, features include:

  • HD streaming: Finally see how intense Red Bull’s videos look on your TV.
  • Send to TV: Control YouTube on Roku from that sick new phone you just got, turning your TV into your personal JumboTron. Just connect your device to the same Wi-Fi as your Roku.
  • Your subscriptions on TV: Sign in to YouTube and easily get your subscribed channels on your TV like PTXOfficial.
