Verizon recently launched a DVR system that allows viewers to record up to 12 shows at once, and store up to 200 hours of HD programming. While these stats are impressive, critics are wondering how necessary it is to simultaneously record 12 shows. While only a small number of TV addicts might require such a feature, Verizon is using these numbers to showcase its significant jump in capabilities. The company’s other DVRs allow viewers to record only one or two shows at a time.

According to Variety, “The telco cited a survey it conducted of 1,000 U.S. consumers, finding that 63 percent were interested in having the ability to record more shows at a given time and 78 percent wanted more storage capacity.”

In competition with Verizon’s DVR are Cablevision Systems’ DVR which can record up to 10 shows at once and Dish Network’s DVR with 8 shows at once.

With the rise of Netflix, HBO Go, Showtime Anytime, Amazon Prime Instant Video, and other video-on-demand services, critics are wondering about the need to store such large quantities of shows on a DVR, when viewers can easily access them online.

Verizon now has two options for Quantum TV: “Premium” which can record up to six shows simultaneously and can store 100 hours of HD programming costing $22 per month, and “Enhanced” which can record twelve shows at the same time and store 200 hours of HD storage at $32 per month.
