The Pirate Bay Returns After Being Shut Down by Authorities
February 3, 2015
Popular file-sharing site The Pirate Bay is back online following a two-month outage after police in Stockholm raided a data center and seized servers. Responding to complaints from Swedish anti-piracy group Rights Alliance, authorities shut down numerous peer-to-peer and torrent-related services on December 9. Later that month, The Pirate Bay page returned, went through several iterations, and eventually replaced its pirate ship with a phoenix logo. A countdown clock indicated a February 1 return, and the site now appears to be live.
“The Pirate Bay is serving torrents once again, and the site is working almost exactly as it did before the outage,” reports VentureBeat. “In fact, it appears the database that was saved includes almost everything — the latest entries are indeed from December 9.”
The Pirate Bay is one of the most popular yet controversial bittorrent trackers that provides access to movies, music, games, software and more.
Since being shut down, a number of copycat sites emerged to satisfy the demand for sharing files and downloading content. Additionally, rumors suggest that former staff members from The Pirate Bay may be launching their own alternative, reportedly disgruntled that the the site that relaunched a few days ago no longer provides them with access to the moderation panel.
“Earlier this week TPB staff already told us that they would be locked out of the reborn site,” explains TorrentFreak. “This kind of streamlining would make the site easier to manage and reduce the risk of being brought down for a third time. However, these planned ‘optimizations’ caused mutiny among the site’s original staff members.”
As of press time, it looks like the phoenix logo has been replaced with the traditional pirate ship, and some functionality of the site is intermittent, possibly due to heavy traffic.
