Amazon announced that it is introducing limited support for high dynamic range content on its Amazon Instant Video service. The HDR support will initially launch for Amazon Prime members in the U.S. with the full original series “Mozart in the Jungle” and the pilot episode of the original “Red Oaks.” Netflix announced earlier that it also plans to support HDR video this year, starting with its original series “Marco Polo.” However, most consumers have yet to purchase televisions that support HDR, so it may take a while for the technology to gain mainstream adoption.

In Amazon’s announcement, the company specified that members can watch the HDR version of “Mozart in the Jungle” via the Amazon Video app on Samsung SUHD TVs.

“HDR videos offer better picture quality, with richer colors, and improved contrast between the bright areas on the screen and the darker parts of the images,” explains TechCrunch.

“The end result is a more engaging picture format — outdoor scenes look more realistic, while you can also more easily pick out images and shapes from darker, shadowy scenes.”

In 2014, Amazon and Netflix began offering movies and TV shows in 4K Ultra HD. Both companies are expected to expand support of 4K and HDR as Hollywood and CE manufacturers work toward consumer awareness and adoption.
