Adobe introduced new versions of Premiere Pro and After Effects at the 2025 NAB Show. For the first time, Adobe’s Premiere Pro editing software gets Firefly generative AI powers. Generative Extend lets users elongate scenes by generating a few extra frames at 4K in the Premiere Pro app, which also gains New Media Intelligence to help find the right clip in seconds. There is also drag-and-drop color management and automatic caption translation to over 27 languages. After Effects gets a more powerful preview playback engine, new 3D motion design tools and HDR monitoring.
“Generative Extend is the first Firefly-powered feature in Premiere Pro, and the first tool of its kind to help editors seamlessly extend video and audio frames to achieve perfectly timed edits,” Adobe Digital Media SVP and GM Ashley Still told CNET.
In addition to extending frames horizontally in 4K, the Generative Extend feature in Premiere Pro 25.5 can also do so vertically, optimizing material for mobile device displays.
Adobe is offering Generative Extend free to try for a limited time, after which using it will require a Firefly subscription and generative credits, which start at $10 per month for 2,000 credits. Credit consumption varies based on resolution selected, as well as format and frame rate.
“Premiere Pro automatically recognizes the subject of imported video clips, including objects, locations, camera angles, and more,” writes PetaPixel, noting “this enables users to search through hours of footage in seconds.” Media Intelligence and Search also supports natural language searching.
The new release includes upgraded Premiere Color Management that “transforms your original log and raw camera files directly to SDR or HDR — without needing LUTs,” automatically (for most camera formats) as the footage is imported.
Adobe explains all the new Premiere Pro 25.5 features in an announcement that also details the upgrades to After Effects 25.5.
“With Animated Environment Lights, you can wrap your 3D comp with moving light made from any video or animation. Use your background plates, 360-degree videos, selected layers, or even an entire comp to illuminate your 3D models with reflections and shadows that move,” Adobe says.
High Performance Preview Playback lets users “preview longer compositions without pausing and waiting for After Effects to re-cache,” a problem that has been especially pernicious on laptops. The solution utilizes a computer’s RAM and local disks together.
