Amazon’s Entry Level Fire Stick HD Adds Alexa Voice Control

Amazon has launched a new Fire TV Stick HD, supplanting the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite as its entry level television device. Priced at $34.99 the black stick plugs into the HDMI port at the back or side of most TVs. A micro USB cable and power plug are included. The Fire TV Stick HD streams at up to 1080p HD and also supports HDR, HDR 10, HDR10+ and HLG. While the new device does not feature support for Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos, its HDMI port will support Dolby-encoded audio. The platform streamlines access to all major streaming services, which of course require independent subscriptions.

In addition to Prime Video, there’s Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, Max, Paramount+, and Disney+, all featured on the interface.

“It’s worth noting that beyond just watching movies or TV shows, you can also stream games through Amazon Luna on the Fire TV Stick HD,” reports TechRadar, with the caveat that it has yet to test the feature and is “eager to see how this performs.”

The device “does not have all the bells and whistles for visual or audio standards that you’ll find on the Fire TV Stick 4K or the Fire TV Stick Max,” but should “definitely be considered” as an entry level device for those with televisions that support HD, writes TechRadar.

The Alexa Voice Remote “not only includes TV controls for power and volume, but by pressing and holding the blue Alexa button, you can control the Fire TV experience with just your voice and even ask for the content you want to watch,” TechRadar notes, adding that Amazon “even includes two AA batteries in the box to power the remote.”

The Alexa integration means you can also use the TV to control smart home devices or query with topical questions.

Powered by a 1.7 GHz eight-core processor, the little stick has Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth LE and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, with 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM.

All that and the new Fire TV Stick HD “is cheaper than the model it’s replacing, with a price tag of $35 compared to $40,” writes Android Police, noting that “if it’s possible to stretch your budget by another $15, the Fire TV Stick 4K is an excellent option, too, given the upgrades it carries.”

By “combining two entry-level streaming sticks into one, now, Amazon offers four streaming devices instead of five: the new Fire TV Stick HD, Fire TV Stick 4KFire TV Stick 4K Max, and Fire TV Cube,” explains ZDNet.
