AMC to Add 65 ScreenX, 4DX Theaters in Deal with CJ 4DPlex

AMC Entertainment has entered into a partnership with South Korean cinema technology company CJ 4DPlex to bring 65 of its ScreenX and 4DX theaters to its venues in the United States and Europe. AMC’s 25 ScreenX auditoriums will use 4DX’s signature multi-projection approach to immerse audiences in a 270-degree field of view, starting this summer. There will be 40 4DX installations opening, beginning in the fall. With 4DX, moviegoers get a multi-sensory experience that includes motion seating and atmospherics like water, wind, scents and snow in addition to special lighting and other effects to enhance the action onscreen.

“The new ScreenX auditoriums will feature Barco laser projectors, immersive sound and recliner seating” while the 4DX 4D presentations will leverage “synchronized motion-based seats, wind, lightning, scents, and other effects,” Variety reports, noting that the build-out is expected to be completed by 2027.

“This partnership comes as we’ve secured our largest film slate ever for both ScreenX and 4DX while simultaneously strengthening our relationships with filmmakers and major studios,” CJ 4DPlex America CEO Don Savant said in an announcement.

Variety reports that upcoming ScreenX and 4DX experiences include films from Lionsgate, Marvel, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros.

AMC is the largest movie exhibition company in the world, with approximately 900 theaters and 10,000 screens across the globe. To keep those seats filled, AMC Entertainment Chairman and CEO Adam Aron said the company is devoted “to delivering the most immersive, cutting-edge experiences to our millions of guests worldwide” as the company continues to “redefine what it means to enjoy a movie.”

“The second largest U.S. chain, Regal, is currently CJ 4DPlex’s largest partner stateside with 52 4DX theaters in operation as well as 52 ScreenX theaters,” Deadline notes. “Regal opened its first 4DX theater in the U.S. in 2014.” Much like IMAX, the novelty of the format can be a major driver to get people away from their TV sets and into theaters.

Deadline says Regal Cinemas’ year-old 4DX auditorium at Times Square in New York City “made ‘Twisters’ in 4DX go viral.” And Regal’s sister companies, Cineworld and CCI, have a combined 62 4DX and 29 ScreenX theaters across Europe and Israel.
