Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision Partners with Meta to Advance MR

James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment has debuted a new unit, Lightstorm Vision, which launches with a deal that sees Meta Quest become its exclusive mixed reality platform. The multiyear deal will see the Hollywood heavyweight partnering with Meta Platforms “to scale the creation of world-class 3D entertainment experiences spanning live sports and concerts, feature films, and TV series featuring big-name IP on Meta Quest,” Meta announced. In addition to producing original content for the Meta Quest, Lightstorm Vision will use its tech to help third parties create new programming and potentially conform existing work through MR conversion.

“Together with Lightstorm Vision, [Meta will] make 3D production tools more accessible across the broader entertainment industry,” according to VentureBeat.

Cameron predicts in a Threads post that the Meta partnership will “revolutionize ALL visual media.” Of Meta advanced tech previewed for him by CTO Andrew Bosworth Cameron writes, “I was amazed by its transformational potential and power, and what it means for content creators globally.”

Lightstorm Vision is “a pioneering technology and tools company, shattering 3D paradigms and revolutionizing how we create and consume media,” according to the company splash page, which touts Cameron’s “30 years of award-winning stereoscopic technology development” including films that “garnered three Academy Awards for Best Cinematography.”

“Details on initial projects from the Lightstorm Vision-Meta collaboration will be shared “in the coming months,” a Meta rep told Variety.

Cameron in September joined the board of Stability AI, and Meta says in a blog post he is “uniquely positioned to contribute to the thoughtful and responsible use of AI” in advancing mixed reality, experienced through headsets that seamlessly blend virtual reality with the real world.

“MR headsets represent the next step in the evolution of media,” Meta says, adding that “utilizing native 3D in the service of traditional and immersive 360-degree environments, along with interactive elements” puts viewers “at the center of the story.”
