Canon EOS C80 Offers Full-Frame 6K Recording for Pro Video

Canon’s new EOS C80 is a professional full-frame 6K cinema camera designed for filmmakers that require a compact yet full-featured device. It is the company’s first cinema model with an RF mount. It also has a back-illuminated, stacked CMOS image sensor with triple-base ISO, which Canon says delivers “stunning imagery in a wide range of lighting conditions.” Base ISOs of 800, 3200 and 12,800 allow for full dynamic range. New to the EOS C line is 12G-SDI output, while Canon’s latest Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus — Dual Pixel AF II — has been added. The C80 also lets users choose from different autofocus frame sizes.

“Advances in sensor and autofocus technology enable the C80 to focus on objects across practically the entire image sensor, which is a big improvement over the C70’s relatively limited autofocus area coverage,” reports PetaPixel, noting that the C80 also features “new subject-tracking modes, including animal-tracking autofocus.”

The 12G-SDI output enables uncompressed video signal transfer via a secure cable connection, enabling the secure SDI over HDMI that pro broadcasters demand. Other interfaces include HDMI, mini-XLR audio inputs, time code, Ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

“This Internet connectivity enables the camera to be controlled remotely via our IP-based XC Protocol using Canon’s Remote Camera Control Application,” which is available free from the Canon USA website, the company explains in an announcement. For iPhone users a Multi-Camera Control App for is available free on the App Store.

TechRadar calls the EOS C80 — which retails for $5,499 excluding lenses — Canon’s “most powerful and versatile cinema camera yet for indie filmmakers.”

“The video-dedicated EOS C80 differs from Canon’s video-focused hybrid cameras like the EOS R5C through its swathe of video tools, such as built-in ND filters (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 stops) and robust connectivity,” TechRadar notes.

“The EOS C80 camera can record up to 6K 30P in Cinema RAW Light,” explains ProVideo Coalition, listing other recording options including the XF-AVC S codec that records in 10-bit 4:2:2 with oversampling, “creating rich detail and smooth imagery without the need for cropping the image from the sensor.”

Autofocus works when recording in slow or fast motion at up to 4K 120P.

The EOS C80 camera also records in XF-HEVC S, Canon says, explaining that and the XF-AVC S are formats that “feature an easy-to-manage naming system and folder structure, while recording in the familiar MP4 format” with metadata.
