CES 2013: Panasonic Premieres 20-inch Tablet and 4K OLED
January 8, 2013
Despite making no mention of Ultra HD or 4K at its pre-show press conference on Sunday, Panasonic made a big splash at its keynote today announcing an ultra-thin 4K tablet that arguably manages to outshine the heavy 4K promotional push of rivals like Toshiba, LG and Sony. The company also unveiled a 56-inch 4K OLED prototype that it claims is the world’s largest of its kind that makes use of a new electronic printing technology.
Joe Taylor, CEO of Panasonic North America, joined the company’s president, Kazuhiro Tsuga in introducing a stylish 20-inch tablet prototype that features an LCD display with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,560 and 230 pixels per inch, weighs just 2.4 kg and measures 10.8mm (0.4 inches) thin. It runs the Windows 8 operating system and is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor and Nvidia GeForce graphics.
Following the keynote, Panasonic was pitching the tablet at applications for digital photo editing and architectural design, although an attendant Panasonic spokesperson revealed that two 4K movies were loaded onto it and that unnamed studio execs had expressed interest.
“We are gathering feedback at the show and based on that we will take the project forward,” said the spokesperson.
The tablet comes with a digital stylus, the Anoto Live pen, which is claimed to have a resolution as high as the tablet itself. A demonstration showed the pen being used to zoom and focus a digital camera tethered to the tablet for use in studio photographic scenarios.
The device also features a HD 720p camera, Bluetooth 4.0, USB and SD memory card slots, and has a capacity for 16GB. There was no word on pricing or release date.
The potential product sits nicely alongside Panasonic’s other Ultra HD surprise, a 56-inch 4K OLED prototype that is just 0.5-inch thin and weighs around 27 pounds. It is one of the first OLED panels made with the company’s printing technology, which is a reportedly more economical process of applying red, green, and blue materials to the panel sublayer.
Panasonic is demonstrating its products this week in Central Hall, booths #9806 and #9406.
