CES 2013: Tiny Wearable Cameras Join the Downsizing Race

Liquid Image introduced two interesting Wi-Fi-enabled products during CES Unveiled – a mountable GoPro competitor called the Ego Mini and the Apex HD+ snow goggle with integrated full HD camera, both CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards honorees. Teamed with the free Liquid Image app (iOS and Android), the cameras can stream live view via Wi-Fi, enable viewing of recorded photos and videos, or activate remote control features.

The Ego Mini – expected to launch by August 2013 for $200 – is just 1.6 x 0.85 x 2.0-inches and records 1080p video at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps. The water resistant camera also shoots 12-megapixel stills.

The camera features an interchangeable battery system for extended recording time that may draw interest from market segments beyond sports enthusiasts. “The Ego Mini can operate more than 4 hours as well as be converted into an IP camera running off an electrical plug or car power port,” explains the press release. “This will allow the Ego Mini to be used for other purposes such as security, baby monitors, car DVRs, Reality TV Shows, and more.”

The Apex HD+ snow goggle, which started shipping in November, was selected as the winner of the Personal Electronics Category in this year’s Innovations Design and Engineering Awards. The goggle touts a 135-degree wide angle lens to capture POV footage, in addition to a rotating lens “to dial in the best angle for your stance while skiing, boarding, sledding or snowmobiling,” suggests the press release.

The Apex HD+ can also record 12-megapixel stills and 1080p video at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps. Both devices accept Micro SDHC cards up to 32GB for onboard storage.

Liquid Image will offer product demonstrations all week in Central Hall (booth #36601) and The Venetian.
