CES: Asus Spatial Vision Brings Glasses-Free 3D to Laptops
January 12, 2023
Engineered for game design and other 3D workflows, the Asus Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED offers glasses-free spatial imaging. To do this, the laptop leverages something Asus calls Spatial Vision, an autostereoscopic OLED technology that creates a set of images for each eye using real-time eye tracking tech. With the 3D mode activated, the images are then projected through a microscopic layer of lenticular lenses built into the display panel. The technology is similar to the SpatialLabs technology Acer debuted in 2021, with one big difference: a Spatial Vision screen will appear 3D to multiple onlookers simultaneously.
Spatial Vision “seemed to work well” in a brief demonstration for The Verge at CES 2023, where a reporter “rotated images around in space,” the 120Hz refresh rate delivering smooth action on the Vivobook Pro’s 3.2K screen.
“The models felt and looked very real, with unbelievably realistic detail,” The Verge reports, noting “things flew out of the screen at me, and I blinked and flinched accordingly, adding that “I was able to move my head from side to side without disrupting the image I saw and could flip effortlessly back and forth between 2D and 3D modes.”
While Spatial Vision supports all manner of 3D — from games to videos — The Verge observed a difference in quality between content natively designed for the system and third-party games, which were said to look “stuttery.” Asus says Spatial Vision has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and response time of 0.2 ms, offering “great potential for rapidly growing metaverse applications.”
Another unusual aspect is Spatial Vision “doesn’t appear to be limited to luxurious high-end models at launch,” writes The Verge, noting that “one of the first laptops that will receive this screen is the Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED, a 16-inch laptop for creators.” While Asus hasn’t announced pricing on the 3D models, coming in various a configurations, last year’s 2D Vivobooks started at around $1,450, according to The Verge.
The Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED has an Intel CPU up to the Core i9-13980HX and an Nvidia GPU up to the GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. Nvidia Studio drivers ensure broad app compatibility and exceptional stability, while a MUX switch facilitates lower latency. The system also has special cooling.
Asus has also added Spatial Vision to the ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED, per PC Magazine, which notes that while MS Office jockeys won’t have much use for glasses-free 3D, “designers, architects, and 3D rendering professionals examining models or floor plans in progress could find it an effective substitute for a physical object while working digitally.”
“Asus says the Spatial Vision tech is compatible with most major platforms and applications, including Blender, SteamVR, and Unreal Engine.”
