CES: Sony Mocopi Adds Full-Body Pro Kits for PC, XR Mocap
January 21, 2025
Sony has debuted a full-body Mocopi mobile motion capture system as part of the ecosystem to support its new extended reality brand XYN (pronounced “zin”), also launched at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. The Mocopi Pro Kit for the new professional mode of Mocopi is available as a PC app and as the XYN Motion Studio app. The apps provide capture and editing functions, while each Pro Kit includes two sets of six lightweight Mocopi sensors, two newly announced Sensor data receivers and an additional set of Sensor bands. The new professional mode expands coverage by connecting 12 Mocopi sensors.
“Lightweight and designed for comfort, the sensors are strategically positioned to track head, hip, wrist, ankle, arms, thighs and either hands or feet,” reports ProVideo Coalition, noting that real-time Bluetooth LE connectivity and direct PC integration via the Mocopi Sensor data receivers ensure the system “seamlessly fits into demanding professional workflows.”
Designed for creators in fields including animation, video game development, virtual reality (VR) and live streaming, the new Pro Kit promises “unprecedented accuracy and flexibility, transforming how professionals approach full-body motion capture,” according to a Sony announcement accompanying the Pro Kit’s CES debut.
“Many of our mocopi customers asked for more sensors in order to capture more points of tracking,” explains Sony Electronics Head of Business for Mocopi Jeff Carlin, adding that advanced users also wanted a more direct connection to their PCs. Carlin says “the Mocopi Pro Kit and the professional mode bring these enhancements and more.”
PetaPixel calls the Mocopi Pro Kit a “groundbreaking motion capture solution,” saying it “serves the company’s broader goals for three-dimensional and spatial content production, an area of increasing interest to camera companies.”
The Mocopi apps provide two primary functionalities — Motion Capture and Motion Editor. “Together, they allow creators to seamlessly record, refine, and export motion data without needing third-party tools,” writes Digital Production, explaining that “motion data can be exported in industry-standard formats like BVH and Filmbox (FBX), ensuring compatibility with leading digital content creation platforms such as Maya, Unreal Engine, and VRChat.”
“Together, the Mocopi PC App and XYN Motion Studio App form a robust ecosystem under Sony’s XYN XR brand, which supports the entire motion capture and editing process, empowering XR creators to achieve professional results with ease,” Sony says.
The Mocopi Pro Kit will be available for pre-order in late March 2025, for a bundled hardware and software price starting at $1,180. The Pro Kit pieces will also be sold individually. The XYN Motion Studio subscription is available for about $9 per month.
Sony introduced Mocopi in 2023 as a way to capture motion using smartphones.
