CES: Xgimi Announces First IMAX Enhanced Home Projector

Xgimi wants to bring the IMAX experience to your living room. The China-based company has unveiled what it says is the first long-throw home projector to earn certification as IMAX Enhanced, a designation previously limited to premium units. Xgimi’s Horizon Max projector is intended for mass market viewing enthusiasts. The IMAX Enhanced specifications include Dolby Vision and DTS:X sound. The Horizon Max promises 3,100 ISO lumens brightness and a contrast ratio of 2,000:1. Pricing was not disclosed at the CES 2024 product announcement, but the projector is expected to ship in the second half of this year.

The certification “includes the infamous IMAX aspect ratio (1.44:1 or 1.9:1), higher brightness levels from HDR content, and clearer images,” per ZDNet.

The Horizon Max smart projector (above) includes two key Xgimi technologies: Intelligent Screen Architecture (ISA) 5.0 and Dual Light 2.0. ISA “uses a mix of hardware and software including a fully automated motorized gimbal to automatically identify the best projection positioning.”

It can also remember the settings for various walls, “so you could game on one wall and then turn the projector to face a bigger wall for movie night, with the system automatically reconfiguring it for you,” according to TechRadar.

The Dual Light 2.0 technology “uses a dual-light source for improved picture quality, especially in brighter environments,” ZDNet writes, specifying “a ‘triple laser’ to display an extended color range and a phosphor light to enhance any imperfections.” Xgimi’s proprietary optical engine leverages multi-chip lasers (MCL), common in high-end commercial theater projection, to achieve the triple laser effect, the company explains in a news announcement.

At CES, Xgimi also unveiled Aladdin (above), “a 3-in-1 product that combines a ceiling lamp, a high-end projector, and connected speakers.” Aladdin “blends flush with the ceiling and looks like an ordinary ceiling lamp, almost concealing the projector entirely,” Xgimi says.

Xgimi founder and CEO Apollo Zhong emphasized the company’s commitment “to enhancing projection technology, striving to bring the theatrical movie experience into every home.” Xgimi plans to bring its updated Dual Light 2.0 and ISA 5.0 technologies to additional products, including portable and home projectors.
