Galaxy Unpacked: More AI for S25 and a Peek at AR Glasses
January 27, 2025
Samsung’s new Galaxy S25 line — the Galaxy S25 Ultra, Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 — will more tightly integrate AI, including AI agents, becoming “true AI companions” at a level previously unknown to mobile devices. That leap is credited largely to a “first-of-its-kind” Snapdragon 8 Elite customization for the Galaxy chipset that “delivers greater on-device processing power for Galaxy AI and superior camera range and control with Galaxy’s next-gen ProVisual Engine,” according to Samsung. In addition, the top-of-the-line Galaxy S25 Ultra has been redesigned with a slightly larger 6.9-inch screen and rounded bevel.
The operating system AI integrations will be useful “for tasks such as serving up recommended actions or apps, allowing users to search for photos using natural language and stringing together multiple actions with a single voice command,” CNET reports. Several of the new S25 features “are competitive with Apple Intelligence, the suite of AI features available on the iPhone, iPad and Mac — further underscoring how tech giants are vying to offer the best AI experience.”
In an announcement by TM Roh, president and head of Mobile eXperience at Samsung Electronics, the company emphasized that the new One UI 7 mobile OS makes the Galaxy S25 series “a true AI companion that understands the context of your needs and preferences and provides personalized AI experiences with privacy assured.”
Samsung also underscored the new OS as “the starting point of a shared vision with Google to imagine Android with AI at the core, bringing together developers and partners from around the world.” Last year, Samsung’s S24 line was the first to bring onboard AI to U.S. mobile users, followed by Google with its Pixel 9, then Apple.
CNET also reports that “Samsung’s new phones will be among the first to incorporate technology from Google’s Project Astra AI assistant into the Gemini app — meaning the Gemini app on those phones will be able to analyze live video and content on screen to answer questions about the world around you,” concluding “the move indicates both Samsung and Google are hoping to position Android as being the ideal mobile platform for AI assistants, with Samsung’s phones playing a big role in that ambition.”
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis joined Samsung in announcing the S25 line at last week’s Galaxy Unpacked event, according to CNET, which details the S25 series features in a separate article.
Tom’s Guide writes that the two tech giants also confirmed at Unpacked that “AR glasses are in Samsung’s development timeline, and they’ll run Android XR thanks to the partnership with Google,” summarizing “what we know so far” about the XR headset.
