GenAI Lets Snapchat+ Subscribers Create and Share Images

Snapchat+ is rolling out new artificial intelligence features that let subscribers use text prompts to create generative AI images to share with friends. In addition, the Dreams feature, which creates generative AI selfies, is now able to add your friends to those photos. Snapchat+ subscribers get one pack of 8 Dreams per month as part of their $3.99 monthly fee. An onscreen button labeled “AI” lets subscribers access the AI image generator to choose from a menu of prompts (including “sunny day at the beach” and “planet made of cheese”) or they can enter their own descriptions.

The app will then generate the image, which users have the option to edit, download and share. “Snapchat+ subscribers were already able to create AI images for their bitmoji backgrounds and chat wallpapers, and can now create and send AI images to their friends,” writes TechCrunch, noting Snapchat did not disclose what generative AI model is being used to power the feature, saying it is working with several partners.

With the new Snapchat Dream update “you can create an AI selfie of yourself and then select one of your friends to appear next to you,” TechCrunch reports. For instance, “you can create an image of you and friends as mermaids, and then either send the image to them or share it on your story.”

The final AI feature in the latest update is an AI extender that lets you add more image. Those who think their photos are cropped in too close can zoom out by clicking on the extend tool to fill in more background.

Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has been using AI “as part of a broader effort to drum up new money-making opportunities amid slowing revenue growth from ad sales,” according to Bloomberg, which says the company has been gathering early access user feedback to improve the features.

The initial product, introduced in February, was the My AI chatbot for Snap+ users that the company later made available free.

The approach seems to be working. Snap “now has 7 million subscribers for its Snapchat+ offering, which gives users early or exclusive access to features on its social media app, including artificial intelligence tools,” Bloomberg says, noting “that’s up from 5 million users in September for the service, which launched July 2022.”
