Google Claims New Chromebook Plus Doubles Performance

Google is introducing the Chromebook Plus, a new category of its popular laptops and tablets that the company says offers AI capabilities and “double the performance” of existing Chromebooks. The new category also provides access to Google Photos Magic Eraser and Adobe Photoshop on the web, starting at $399. Google says it drew on user feedback and worked with partners at Acer, Asus, HP and Lenovo to optimize performance and add productivity. The initial eight models all feature processors that are 12th Generation Intel Core i3 or above or AMD Ryzen 3 7000 series or above.

They also offer a minimum of 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, a 1080p+ camera and screens that display in at least full HD IPS (1080p LCD). The new laptops extend some of the premium features in Google Meet, “using the enhanced camera, processor and more to bring AI features directly into the OS on Chromebook Plus,” Google says in a blog post.

All of that translates to better video calls, Google says, detailing AI assistance “to enhance your call’s clarity and lighting, cancel background noise and blur backgrounds with just a couple of taps.” Those features work “no matter what video conferencing app you use, whether that’s Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams or others.”

The options will appear built-in ChromeOS software video call tools on their Chromebook app shelf.

Engadget lauded Google’s “straightforward” pitch for Chromebooks as “laptops that don’t require a lot of fuss, with easy set-up, fast boot times and a simple software update process.”

Google has also offered assurances of protection from viruses and malware, and committed to 10 years of automatic software updates a few weeks ago.

The new File Sync feature automatically keeps Google Drive files locally available for offline use, thanks largely to the Plus’ minimum 128GB of storage “but it’s not clear how the system will decide what to download or how much space to use,” Engadget observes, adding that “offline utilities for Chromebooks should nonetheless be handy.”

Google says it plans to add all the Plus software improvements to every Chromebook model that meets minimum specifications sometime “soon.”
