Google Pushes Gemini in Android Studio for App Developers
April 11, 2025
Google’s Gemini coding assistant has gained agentic capabilities, available as part of Gemini in Android Studio, a subscription service for businesses designed to make app development for the Android ecosystem easier and more secure. This agent-centric “AI-powered cloud for developers and operators” is designed to infuse AI into all stages of application development, laying the groundwork for more rapid software creation cycles. The service is available to those who subscribe to Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise editions. The new offering was unveiled at the Google Cloud Next 2025 developer conference in Las Vegas.
By offering agentic support to software developers in every task, tasks can be offloaded to AI bots that work with minimal supervision.
“In Google’s vision, developers are essentially taking on the role of overseers, in a process that it promises will streamline the design, deployment and evolution of cloud-based applications,” writes SiliconANGLE,. Google views such automation as “necessary because traditional software development is becoming extremely resource intensive and complex.”
TechCrunch writes that “these agents can create applications from product specifications in Google Docs, for example, or perform code transformations from one language to another.”
Developers and admins who have or are willing to purchase a Gemini Code Assist subscription can assign licenses to developers in their organization directly from the Google Cloud console, the company explains in blog post that emphasizes security.
“Our data governance policy helps ensure customer code, customers’ inputs, as well as the recommendations generated will not be used to train any shared models,” Google says, adding that “customers control and own their data and IP.”
Google offers generative AI IP indemnification with the subscription, safeguarding against third parties claiming copyright infringement related to AI-generated code created using its service.
VentureBeat explains “this business version of Gemini builds on the core AI capabilities already familiar to Android developers but introduces enhanced features for organizations managing sensitive codebases and workflows.” Google says Gemini in Android Studio brings AI-assisted coding to big and small businesses alike in an enterprise-grade environment that offers security, IP protection and data governance.
“Though Apple remains the dominant smartphone maker in the U.S., Google‘s Android mobile operating system is a hit with enterprises and businesses thanks to its flexibility and lower price point,” writes VentureBeat, noting that a “recent survey by strategic advisory Stratix found that 60 percent of corporate-owned devices run the tech.”
TechCrunch reports the AI coding assistant market is growing “fiercer by the month, and there’s a lot of money in it,” not surprising given “the tech’s productivity-boosting potential.”
