GoPro’s Hero13 Black Earns Adds New Lens Mount and HLG HDR

GoPro has announced two new cameras, the $399 Hero13 Black with swappable lenses, and its smallest 4K camera ever, the $199 Hero. The high-end Hero13 Black boasts better battery performance and four interchangeable Hero Black-series lens modules with automatic adjustments for settings. A 13x Burst Slo-Mo feature captures up to 400 frames per second at 720p, with options for 5.3K at 120 frames per second or 900p at 360 fps. Improved Wi-Fi 6 uploads at up to 40 percent faster transfer speeds and enhanced audio and voice settings are among the upgrades.

After being left underwhelmed by last year’s Hero12, PetaPixel writes that the Hero13 Black “appears laser-focused on providing better usability and higher quality footage across the board,” noting that “instead of relying on boosts to resolution, GoPro upgraded the systems around the sensor.”

The Hero13 Black has the ability to shoot in professional-quality Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) HDR video mode, with broadcast-standard 10 bit and Rec. 2100 color space “and a wider color gamut than HDR alone,” GoPro details in its announcement.

GoPro added an HDR option last year, but the move to HLG and the wider color space is applauded by PetaPixel.

Mashable reports the Hero13 Black’s new 1900mAh battery “provides the camera with enough juice to continuously record for 1.5 hours at its highest resolution settings, over twice the length of the HERO12 Black’s 70-minute limit,” though the performance varies based on factors including temperature and frame rate.

GoPro has also updated the HB lens mounting system, adding a “snap and go” magnetic latch mount. This “joins the classic built-in mounting fingers and 1/4-20 mounting threads for a third way to mount the GoPro Hero13,” PetaPixel writes. While this is now the quickest way to secure the lenses, “GoPro didn’t remove the other methods as they are more secure.”

ZDNet breaks out pricing for the lenses and a new filter pack that creates cinematic motion blur.

Mashable and CNET both enthuse about the accessories. Mashable cites “a 1/4-20 mounting thread enabling you to attach it to a standard tripod” in addition to the standard flip-down mounting prongs present on previous models, and a new ball joint mount that “will allow you to pivot your camera 180 degrees, simplifying the process of adjusting your camera angle.”

PetaPixel sums up the new Hero as weighing “a scant 86 grams” and “waterproof down to 15 feet,” with features including 2x slow motion at 2.7K, HyperSmooth stabilization, and aspect ratio of 16:9.

“Forget 8K video, the GoPro Hero13 Black’s swappable lenses are a masterstroke and the future of action camera design” is the verdict from TechRadar.
