HBO Offers Past Seasons of its Shows on Google Play Store

HBO announced that it is now offering a limited selection of past seasons of its original programs via the Google Play digital storefront, providing fans with access to shows on their Android-based smartphones and tablets as well as Google’s Chromecast streaming adapter for televisions. The network is currently offering individual seasons of seven shows, with plans to add more titles and seasons in the coming weeks. HBO says the gradual rollout is part of a larger marketing strategy to “create more sustained awareness.”

“Rather than rushing all titles up at once, and possibly overshadowing the availability of key titles, we wanted to highlight titles as they go up, with more new content added each week over the next few months,” explained an HBO rep.

Current HBO offerings via Google Play include: “Boardwalk Empire” (season 3), “Game of Thrones” (season 2), “Girls” (season 2), “The Newsroom” (season 1), “True Blood” (season 5), “Veep” (season 1) and “The Wire” (season 5).

“Pricing for the skeins is the same as on Apple’s iTunes and other electronic sell-through services,” reports Variety. “For example, the full second season of ‘Game of Thrones’ is $28.99 in standard-definition and $38.99 in HD via Google Play, as it is on iTunes. Single episodes are $2.99 for SD and $3.99 for HD.”

The HBO Go app for Android mobile devices is already available to subscribers through their cable, satellite or telco provider, and provides streaming access to every HBO original series.

“That HBO is expanding the availability of its popular shows to other platforms is notable,” suggests CNET. “The company relies on subscribers to pay its bills and allows for free streaming of its content through HBO Go. That service, however, is available only to its subscribers. When buying its shows on iTunes or Google Play, customers don’t need to be HBO subscribers, allowing them to sidestep the company’s monthly fees.”
