HTC’s $1000 Vive Focus Vision XR is Built for Work and Fun
September 24, 2024
From exercising in outer space to navigating via Google Earth VR, HTC has made inroads with its Vive headsets. The new mixed reality model, the Vive Focus Vision XR, has color passthrough and 2448 x 2448 resolution per-eye. Aiming squarely at the enterprise and high-end gaming markets, it accommodates tethered PCVR or standalone play, while IPD eye tracking makes it suitable for high-volume environments, like training or industrial use. Available for $999 for the consumer platform and $1,299 for enterprise, this latest iteration in the Focus Vision series is also made for location-based experiences.
Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 chipset, the DisplayPort mode supports what HTC says are “visually lossless PCVR experiences.” It does this “by connecting the headset directly to a PC graphics card,” according to VentureBeat.
HTC says it’s “perfect for PCVR gamers who have SteamVR game collections, as well as enterprise organizations who want to deliver a powerful immersive experience.”
“We’re taking everything to the next level with built-in eye-tracking, stereo color passthrough cameras for depth-correct mixed reality, and even an infrared sensor for enhanced hand tracking in low-light conditions,” HTC Vive Global Head of Product Shen Ye said in a news announcement.
Ye compared the Focus Vision XR experience to “high-end headsets used in VR arcades.”
The Verge reports that the Focus Vision XR builds on 2021’s Vive Focus 3, offering the same resolution, 120-degree field of view and even the same Qualcomm chip. Added are dual 16MP cameras for stereoscopic color passthrough, improved tethering and the auto IPD to adjust the lenses to compensate for the variation in the width between users’ eyes, a feature offered with the Apple Vision Pro as well as the Pico 4 Enterprise.
A built-in battery keeps the Vision XR operating for 20 minutes beyond the main power pack’s roughly two-hour life, providing time to swap when the in-use source quits.
While Vive Focus 3, which only had black-and-white passthrough, “was only sold to businesses, Vive Focus Vision is being offered to consumers too,” reports UploadVR, citing “’depth-correct mixed reality,’ as well as a depth projector for scene meshing and improved hand tracking in low light.”
Pre-orders for Vive Focus Vision are open through October 17. Customers who pre-order will receive free of charge a Vive Wired Streaming Kit for DisplayPort mode HTC values at $149. Additionally, Vive Focus Vision buyers will have their choice of one of three popular game bundles as a complimentary package.
