Instagram ‘Edits’ Video App Is Released for iOS and Android

Instagram has released a standalone video editing tool called Edits that is being described as a full-fledged suite that also has camera capabilities. The resulting content can be released on any social platform, not just those from Meta Platforms, though an Instagram account is required to access Edits. Available worldwide for iOS and Android, Edits is positioned as a way for social videographers to level-up their Instagram or Facebook Reels, but also as a tool for professionals who want a simple mobile solution for short-form videos. Edits also offers analytics so creators can see how their work is performing.

Those shooting natively in Edits can choose between 2K and 4K for capture of up to 10 minutes per pop. “You can also change the frame rates (choosing from 24, 30 or 60 frames per second) and pick between SDR and HDR,” CNET writes, adding that “the side menu also lets you add a green screen background and trending sounds or access Meta AI’s creation tools.”

Whether starting with preshot video or material captured in-app,the editing suite includes the ability to add captions, voiceovers, trending sounds, photo overlays and stickers,” CNET reports, emphasizing that Edits “autosaves your changes, which makes it easy to toggle between multiple projects.”

Meta says it’s been collaborating with creators on the tool since last year and has incorporated recommended features. “And we’ll continue to add new features based on your feedback,” the company explains in a news post.

Among the improvements already in the works:

  • Keyframes: Pinpoint exact moments for adjustments to your video’s timing, motion and effects.
  • Modification: Quickly change the look and feel of your videos with AI effects.
  • Collaboration: Easily share drafts with friends, other creators or brands for feedback and creative builds.
  • Creativity: More fonts, text animations, transitions, voice effects, filters and music options, including royalty-free.

On release, Edits offers conveniences such as the ability to “share directly to Instagram and Facebook from within the app, or export and post wherever you want with no added watermarks.” It also offers “real-time feedback on factors that can affect distribution (like skip rate) so you know what’s working and what to try next,” Meta says.

“The Edits app was teased by Instagram head Adam Mosseri back in January when TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, which also owns a video Editing app called CapCut, were made unavailable in the U.S. for a brief period,” writes Android Central.
