Japan To Launch 4K TV Service Two Years Ahead of Schedule
January 29, 2013
According to reports coming from Japan’s Asahi newspaper, “the Japanese government is set to launch the world’s first 4K TV broadcast in July 2014, roughly two years ahead of schedule, to help stir demand for ultra high-definition televisions,” reports Reuters. The service will begin from communications satellites and then from satellite broadcasts and ground digital broadcasts to follow.
Japanese TV makers Sony, Panasonic and Sharp all sell 4K TVs already. South Korea’s LG Electronics is another 4K manufacturer. The sets boast four times the resolution of current HDTVs.
Originally, Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications aimed to launch the 4K TV service in 2016, but the date has been moved to July 2014 to coordinate with the final match of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Additionally, “in Japan, the development of super high-definition 8K TVs is in progress, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications plans to launch the test 8K TV broadcast in 2016, two years ahead of schedule,” writes Reuters.
