MLB Network Launches $5.99 Standalone Streaming Service
July 25, 2024
Major League Baseball has rolled out a standalone streaming option of MLB Network for $5.99 per month without requiring a pay-TV subscription. The direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service is currently available to baseball fans in the U.S. without the need for cable, satellite or Internet TV. For die-hard fans, the MLB Network + At Bat bundle — available for $6.99 per month — also includes live game audio for all MLB teams through MLB At Bat, live Minor League Baseball games, and access to highlights and live look-ins via MLB Big Inning. Current MLB.TV subscribers can stream MLB Network for the rest of this season at no additional cost.
This is major news for many sports fans since “MLB Network was dropped from YouTube TV’s streaming service before the 2023 season,” writes Sports Illustrated.
“The league was a pioneer in sports streaming, having launched the MLB.TV out-of-market service way back in 2002,” reports Variety. “The linear MLB Network will continue to be carried by pay-TV affiliates. For the 10th consecutive year, viewers who receive MLB Network from a participating distributor can watch via an authenticated live stream.”
According to the MLB announcement, however, “viewers will be subject to local blackouts for live games on MLB Network and provided with alternate programming.”
Game telecast series “MLB Network Showcase” returns on July 29, while studio show “MLB Tonight” — featuring analysis and league coverage — continues to air every night, joining a collection of other notable studio programs.
“For MLB’s trade deadline on July 30, MLB Network will air 12.5 straight hours of live coverage,” The Wrap explains. “Additionally, the documentary series ‘MLB Network Presents’ will profile Hall of Famer Greg Maddux this August.”
MLB Network is the recipient of 42 national Sports Emmy Awards.
