Motorola Will Preinstall Perplexity on New Razr, Edge Models

Perplexity AI has entered into a deal with Motorola to preinstall its artificial intelligence search engine technology in Motorola smartphones, giving buyers three free months of Perplexity Pro, which costs $20 per month and includes a deep research feature. Earlier this year, Motorola launched a Moto AI beta program to test core features like “Catch me up,” “Pay attention” and “Remember this” prompts. Based on feedback, Motorola says it has enhanced these features further as well as developed new AI experiences that will be available on the new generation of Razr and Edge devices.

“Motorola and Perplexity also created a few custom integrations, including direct access through Moto AI by typing ‘Ask Perplexity’ and a Perplexity Assistant that can do things like send emails, set smart reminders, play media, request rides, and book restaurant reservations,” PCMag writes.

“Perplexity is getting in on the smartphone game, following Apple and OpenAI’s Siri-ChatGPT integration introduced in December,” CNBC reports.

The deal between the AI search company and smartphone maker is “a distribution partnership, meaning it’s about Perplexity gaining users rather than revenue” Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas told CNBC in an interview.

The partnership will also give Perplexity insights into “how people that aren’t part of its typical audience use the technology — whether it’s for simple alarms and reminders or more complex tasks,” CNBC writes, noting “investors are eyeing smartphone-AI partnerships as a way for the technology to make it into the hands of consumers on the go every day.”

OpenAI has reportedly expressed interest in purchasing a hardware startup its CEO Sam Altman developed on the side with former Apple designer Jony Ive’s new company LoveFrom to “make AI devices including a ‘screenless phone,’” CNBC notes.

On the Razr 60 Ultra, Razr Ultra and Edge 60 Pro phones, “users can take advantage of the new AI key to launch Moto AI from any screen,” getting a variety of creative features, including Image Studio, Motorola shares in an announcement that also touts a Microsoft deal that offers access to “Microsoft Copilot directly via Moto AI.”
