MyFree DirecTV: FAST Platform Slated to Launch Next Month
October 14, 2024
DirecTV is launching a free ad-supported streaming TV platform, MyFree DirecTV, available November 15. At launch, the FAST service will provide viewers with curated content and what DirecTV promises will be “an extensive on-demand library.” Additional channels are slated to join the MyFree DirecTV platform starting in 2025. The service will be offered nationwide via online, mobile and on select smart TVs and streaming devices. The company cites FAST’s earning potential, “generating nearly $8 billion in the U.S. alone this year” as viewers enjoy a free ride amidst escalating subscription fees.
Initial programming is set to include “FOX Weather; reruns of A&E’s Louisiana-set reality show ‘Duck Dynasty’; SportsGrid, which provides live sports betting coverage, news and analysis; and Lionsgate’s MovieSphere FAST channel,” Variety writes.
Other content said to be on tap: the Tastemade food and lifestyle network, the Latino network El Rey Rebel from Fuse TV, Ebony TV, PokerGO and Nosey, which specializes in daytime talk shows from the 1990s and early 2000s, although it includes some current content.
Kent Rees joins DirecTV as general manager of MyFree DirecTV, overseeing operations, channel strategy and the platform’s launch, the company announced. Rees has 20 years of TV experience, most recently at Sling TV.
DirecTV Advertising Chief Sales Officer Amy Leifer explains the company is “laser-focused on strengthening our investment in this area as we empower our advertising clients to reach new audiences with targeted and contextual solutions and innovative ad formats.”
DirecTV recently reached an agreement to acquire the Dish Network in a $10 billion deal. It also inked a deal with Disney, and The Wrap positions the new FAST platform as “a ‘starting point’ for consumers as DirecTV prepares to launch genre-specific bundles around sports, entertainment and kids & family” as a result of that deal.
“The deal will also bundle Disney’s streaming services in select TV packages under a wholesale agreement and on an à la carte basis, while providing the rights to distribute ESPN flagship at no additional cost to DirecTV subscribers following its launch in 2025,” The Wrap notes.
