The summer Olympics are coming to a theater near you, courtesy of NBCUniversal and AMC Theatres. NBC will extend daily live coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics events to 160 AMC locations nationwide, from July 27-August 11. Tickets will be available for purchase through AMC and Fandango this summer. Excluding opening and closing ceremonies, select daytime hours of the NBC network’s coverage will be telecast live to the big screens as they unfold in Paris. A 2024 Paris Olympics promotional trailer will begin running in AMC Theatres beginning March 29.
“As movie theaters continue to struggle to maintain profitability, they’re looking at new ways to fill seats,” writes TV Technology, calling the 2024 Paris Olympics “an arrow to its quiver in the battle to attract new moviegoers” for the nation’s largest theater chain, while calling out the fact that the opening and closing ceremonies are “often the highest rated shows during the two-week event.”
“If you love a communal sports-watching experience, but can’t swing by Paris this summer to catch the 2024 Olympic Games in person, your next best bet will be seeing some of the live coverage in a bona fide movie theater,” according to NBC Insider, which says this Olympics marks a historic first, with competitive break dancing. This, in addition to traditional summer sports like gymnastics, tennis, swimming, track racing, and many others.
“Paris 2024 will have more programming hours on the NBC broadcast network than any previous Olympics, and in a Summer Games first for Peacock, the service will stream every sport and event, including all 329 medal events, for over 5,000 hours of live coverage,” TV Tech reports.
“Communities across the country will have the opportunity to cheer for Team USA or their own hometown hero in local AMC Theatres,” NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel said in an NBCUniversal press release. “The afternoon broadcasts on NBC will offer many of the most compelling live moments from Paris, and we believe these gatherings will fuel overall enthusiasm for the Games.”
In addition to NBC and Peacock, other NBCU cable networks, including Telemundo, will also offer Summer Olympics programming. NBCUniversal holds U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games through 2032.
