Netflix Enables Bookmarking, Sharing of Scenes with Moments

Netflix wants to make viewing a more memorable and interactive experience with Moments, a new mobile feature that makes it easy to save, relive and share favorite scenes from movies and series. Launching globally on iOS and coming soon to Android, Moments not only allows you to revisit pivotal plot points, but also lets you restart the film or episode right from that bookmark. Sharing Moments on Instagram, Facebook and other social platforms is reportedly just as easy. You can share a Moment as you create it or, from the My Netflix tab, you can select a scene and tap to share it across all of your platforms.

To promote the launch of Moments functionality, Netflix “is debuting fresh marketing campaign, ‘It’s So Good,’  featuring stars including Giancarlo Esposito, Simone Biles and Cardi B nerding out over their own favorite scenes from Netflix movies and TV shows,” writes Variety, which embeds the spot.

The campaign is “all about celebrating these unforgettable moments,” Netflix CMO Marian Lee told Variety. “Whether it’s sparking Halloween costume ideas or becoming a TikTok sensation, the incredible fandoms we see are a testament to what makes Netflix amazing.”

The Verge deems it potentially “a very useful way to share parts of something you’re watching with friends.” Biles confirms as much. “When I get hooked by a story, I go deep. It happens all the time — I’m watching a scene and have to find someone to talk to about it,” Variety quotes the world champion gymnast saying, adding that “at the end of the day, I’m a fan who obsesses over shows like everyone else.”

To capture a Moment, viewers need only tap the screen while watching Netflix to open the various menu options, The Verge explains. “Then tap on the new ‘Moments’ button to pop up a new menu, and then tap the save button.” The Moments menu lists other Moments that have been saved from a TV show or movie. Moments links can also be copied to the clipboard.

“Clip sharing is a popular way for fans to capture memorable moments of their favorite shows, but Netflix places restrictions on taking screenshots or screen recording while streaming,” TechCrunch notes, concluding the new feature is a preferable alternative to what it deems “sketchy apps” that could be used as workarounds, as well as “having to record the TV screen with your phone, often resulting in a grainy, low-quality video.”

In its announcement, Netflix says it hopes to expand the Moments feature in the future, urging viewers to “stay tuned for updates.”
