Netflix Expands Dubbing and Subtitle Options to 30 Languages

Netflix has gone multilingual, adding a feature that lets viewers choose from a list of more than 30 languages for dubbing or subtitles on any title. The option has previously only been available via mobile and Web browsers, with TV options limited to a handful of choices deemed relevant based on geographic location. Referencing some of its most popular programming — such as South Korea’s “Squid Game,” Spain’s “Berlin” and France’s “Lupin” — Netflix explains, “we know that language availability is what helped these stories and characters find fans beyond their country of origin.”

The streaming giant says that non-English stories account for nearly a third of all viewing on the platform, making translation an important feature. “We’ve received thousands of language availability requests per month,” Netflix reveals in an announcement touting what it calls a “much-anticipated feature.”

Netflix is allowing viewers to mix and match language audio and subtitle settings as a tool for language learning. “You can also select to watch a title with dubbing in one language and subtitles in another,” writes Variety, embedding a clip from the Shonda Rhimes hit “Bridgerton” to demonstrate how that works.

Netflix notes that it already offers several language-learning support features, “including the ability to customize subtitles” and the ability to Browse by Language on PCs.

“If you’re trying to learn a new language by viewing your favorite Mexican show with Korean dubbing and English subtitles, or watching the latest Netflix discovery with family members who speak several languages, the Netflix TV experience just got a whole lot more multilingual,” the company concludes.

TechRadar calls the TV language expansion “an important and welcome upgrade for Netflix specifically, because it’s been investing quite heavily in movies and shows from around the world,” with many non-English hits.
