Netflix is currently testing a new feature in its mobile app that helps users stay connected with shows via trailers, alerts, videos and photos. Those who are in the test group will see an “Extras” tab positioned between Search and Downloads at the bottom of the screen. Rather than the vertical scroll of the current Coming Soon section, users navigate through the Extras feed horizontally, similar to the Instagram Stories model. Videos will play automatically, but require pressing a button to activate sound. Netflix has confirmed testing the new feature, but not whether it will become a permanent addition.
“We are testing a feed of video extras in our mobile app to help fans connect more deeply with the titles they love and discover new ones to watch,” explained a Netflix spokesperson. “These tests typically vary in length of time and by region, and may not become permanent.”
“Interestingly, these images aren’t available anywhere else within Netflix’s app,” reports Variety. “Also notable: The feed emphasizes sharing recommendations with others through third-party apps, as well as adding titles to your list.”
“This isn’t the first time Netflix has taken some inspirations from apps like Instagram and Snapchat,” adds Variety. “Last year, the video service began to integrate vertical video previews that mirror the look of Instagram Stories into its app.”
Netflix “has also leveraged social platforms for sharing recommendations — like when it added Instagram Story integrations,” notes TechCrunch. “This feature combines both elements, in a way, so could prove popular. The test is running on both iOS and Android, we understand.”
