Kickstarter announced yesterday that the crowdfunding service has reached a new milestone by launching more than 100,000 projects. Nearly 44 percent of the projects have been successfully funded by a total of $535 million. The top categories for launched projects include Film & Video, Music, Publishing, Art and Games. If its current funding rate continues, the service could raise its first billion as early as sometime this year.
“It’s official! Over 100K projects have launched on Kickstarter. Can’t wait to see what comes next!” read a tweet from the company yesterday afternoon.
“Kickstarter launched publicly four years ago and has seen the rate of launched projects skyrocket since then,” reports Mashable. “During the first two years, just more than 20,000 projects were launched on the site, and nearly 80,000 more were launched over the following two years.”
In January, Kickstarter announced that $102 million from nearly 900,000 people had been pledged to independent film projects. By March, more than $107 million had been pledged to games.
“The rate of funding has increased as well,” notes the post. “Kickstarter pledges topped $300 million in 2012, more than triple the amount from the previous year. If this trend continues, Kickstarter could raise its first $1 billion in 2013.”
