New Samsung Glasses-Free 3D Game Monitor May Cost $2K
March 26, 2025
Samsung Electronics has unveiled three new Odyssey game monitor lineup, including the the glasses-free Odyssey 3D, a 27-inch display that achieves an immersive, off-the-screen effect through a combination of advanced eye-tracking and proprietary lenticular lens technology. Also featured is a 27-inch 4K monitor, the Odssey OLED G8 that Samsung says is the first in the industry to deliver a 4K image at a 240Hz refresh rate. The curved G9 series is updated with a 49-inch ultrawide. Samsung also introduced a new professional monitor, the 37-inch ViewFinity S8, a 4K monitor that offers more screen space and meticulous color specs.
All four 2025 products were showcased in January at CES 2025 and are available for preorder now, though official U.S. pricing has not been announced. The Verge writes that while the Odyssey 3D is “available to reserve,” it might wind up costing $2,000. Digital Trends says it “could be around $1,700 when it lands in the U.S. on April 8.”
In China, among the countries where Samsung has begun a gradual global rollout, the ViewFinity S8 is priced at the U.S. equivalent of $550.
The Odyssey 3D is described by Tom’s Hardware as a new Samsung sub-brand. Samsung Display has been developing glasses-free 3D for the past 15 years. Previewed throughout 2024 at events including August’s Gamescom, this release model uses a 165Hz refresh rate and “advanced eye-tracking technology combined with a lenticular lens to create a 3D effect that adjusts based on the user’s perspective,” Home Theater Review reports.
Officially known as the G90XF, the Odyssey 3D also supports gaming and video in standard 2D. In addition, using Samsung’s Reality Hub interface (as yet unreleased), it can harness your computer’s GPUs — “Nvidia-only,” per Tom’s — “to convert 2D videos or movies to 3D on the fly, as long as the content is not DRM-protected,” similar to the RTX HDR and VSR (Video Super Resolution) capabilities available via the Nvidia App for gamers and creators.
Samsung says the Reality Hub will be available at Samsung.com and the Microsoft Store, and that only games listed in the Reality Hub will convert to 3D on the monitor.
The Odyssey OLED G8 (model G81SF) is available in 27-inch and 32-inch sizes. In addition to being the first 4K monitor with a 280Hz refresh rate, Samsung says the 166 pixels-per-inch display for the 27-inch makes it “the industry’s highest pixel density for a screen that size.”
The Odyssey G9 (model G91F) ultrawide features a Dual QHD display (equivalent to side-by-side 5120 x 1440 displays, for super-fine detail) with a 1000R curve to wrap users in gameplay and 144Hz refresh rate.
The ViewFinity S8 (S80UD) is Samsung’s largest 16:9 4K monitor to date, offering 34 percent more screen than its predecessor. The 4K screen’s HDR10 can “accurately portray 1 billion colors,” according to the company, which provides details on all models in its newsroom post.
